Swindle Essay

What if you got swindled? Would you tell the police that he ripped you off? Or would you steal back what’s rightfully yours? Swindle by Gordon Kormon is a fun little book about a boy named Griffin , who gets ripped off, on a 1 million dollar Babe Ruth card! So then he plans his revenge, he gathers a team of the best of the best, and proves that kids can do anything together. That they can even break into a house with two attack dogs and a state of the art security system and not get caught. The story Swindle is a comedy. Characteristics, purpose, and plotline are the perfect match for this story, and I think the book is pretty funny too.

First of all, there are the Characteristics. Characteristics are a huge part of the book. Although, there are only 2 for comedy they are still big. The first one is that the main character is in control. Griffin as soon as the card got stolen he created a plan and knew what he was doing. Then there is Realistic. This event is not likely to happen to us one day, but you never know if something similar could sneak up on you.

With a comedy there is also a plotline. Here is the plotline in order. In a comedy there is normal day life, he is going to have a sleep over with his friend in an abandoned house they are going to tear down, he finds the card in an old drawer. Next, comes the major problem. Griffin tries to sell the card with his friend to get money to pay off their families’ debt on the house. He sells it for 100$. Problem is realized. After this he turns on the T.V. and he notices that Swindle is on the screen saying that he has a 1,000,000$ card. Resolution, he gets a group of unique kids from his grade to steal back the card. Back to Normal everyday life, Griffin has the card and the police catch him, but they can’t do anything because the card wasn’t rightfully his at all. It actually belonged to an old lady who gave it to her selfish grandson who found his way on their team. It actually ends happily for him though, because his father’s invention is going to be produced and they will pay off all their debt.

Finally, there is the purpose. The first one is we can solve our own problems he obviously does this. The Final one is a happy ending, everyone in the end is happy even all the people on the team who didn’t get any money.

Swindle was probably in the top ten stories I read. It was very exciting, I loved the way it was descriptive of all the surroundings in the heist. Swindle is obviously a comedy because all the clues line up perfectly. I love Swindle!
