Greg Vs. Jonathan

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a fun book about a young 13 year old boy who has to go to middle school he only has one friend and he wants to be popular, and The Fighting Ground by Avi is about a 13 year old boy too, that wants to fight for the rebels during the revolutionary war.  Although these books don't have much in common, their main characters do.

Greg and Jonathan both have to survive.  Throughout both books they need to survive either jungles of large kids that almost need to shave or guns firing at will.  In addition they both believe strongly about what they are doing.  Greg in Diary of a Wimpy Kid thrives for popularity, but he just can't get it.  He tries so hard that he ends losing respect.  Jonathan has a similar situation; he goes and fights, but he realizes that this whole thing was for nothing and he didn't gain anything in the end.

Although they are alike, they also have differences.  Greg has a situation that is low priority that doesn't really matter in the end.  On the other hand Jonathan's in life or death.  He goes and risks his life for freedom.  Also they have different beliefs about succeeding.  Jonathan will do whatever it takes even if it means killing someone, but Greg tries as hard as he can just to move up one spot on his list.

The Fighting Ground by Avi and Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kenny are great books.  They may not be in the same time period, but they obviously have a common ground.  I believe that although they are in different time periods Greg and Jonathan still have stuff in common.
